The place was hard to access because it is located at the tip of Mengsong area, North of Menghai. When we arrived in Naka, night was falling, and a thunderstorm burst out. We will always remember the solace brought by a\u003cstrong\u003e fragrant and bitter cup\u003c\/strong\u003e of Naka Gushu. A handful of leaves thrown in a simple mug, enjoyed by the fireplace while rain and thunder was wrecking havoc in the courtyard. Unsurprisingly, the road is in perfect condition and the ride from Menghai only takes two hours. The \u003cstrong\u003edelicate balance\u003c\/strong\u003e between soft and hard power that the tea delivered ten years ago was still present in our mind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat happened in ten years is simple. Naka became the \u003cstrong\u003emost famous\u003c\/strong\u003e tea village in Northern Menghai. Combined with a small production compared to Bulang or Jingmai area, one can expect to find a lot of mislabelled teas being sold there. We visited a couple of factories. You can learn a lot about the farmers by just checking their factories. Watch all the Columbo episodes and you'll know about it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter trying different teas, we settled for their \u003cstrong\u003esecond flush Gushu\u003c\/strong\u003e, which they had just made a week ago, in late April. As a famous terroir, Naka is about as expensive as Lao Man E. For a first try, we'd like to offer the \u003cstrong\u003ebest price for value\u003c\/strong\u003e. We also bought a kg of early Spring tea that we might add to your order as free samples.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tea is the real deal, you get a \u003cstrong\u003ehigh velocity bitterness\u003c\/strong\u003e, different from what you'd get in a Bulang tea. The bitterness is more in the upper mouth than on the tongue and it doesn't change into sweetness but rather into \u003cstrong\u003ehigh-pitched fragrance\u003c\/strong\u003e. It's just a different experience. But they attract you with a certain bite that makes you want to have another cup.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf Naka is the most famous village in Mengsong, it is not due to unjustified hype. There are many villages in Mengsong area, all distant from each other. There is no reason why Naka would be famous, apart from providing the best tea out there. It is the \u003cstrong\u003epinnacle of mengsong terroir\u003c\/strong\u003e because it exhibits all the noticeable characteristics at an expanded volume.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOther villages would either have bitterness or fragrance. Sure you could blend them and get something like Naka, but you wouldn't have it as powerful as the original. Some teas from Mengsong also feature a short-lived bitterness, of a nature different from the Bulang bitterness, you can find that bitterness in some Jingmai teas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDespite its large area, Mengsong doesn't have a lot of ancient tea gardens. The bulk of the tea comes from conventional plantations. Some of them were established early on, in the 1950s. A push for more ecological growing techniques has lead to the conversion of some plantations into natural tea gardens. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNaka is the Northernmost village in the Mengsong mountain range, it is also the most prestigious one because it combines both the fragrance and the bitterness that make the essence of this area. Naka also hosts a moderate amount of ancient tea gardens.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNaka is inhabited by the Lahu minority and some Han families. They lived in isolation until the Pu-erh boom. There is plenty of it on the market, but most of it is made of really bad material or has been poorly aged. Fortunately, good tea eventually makes it into your cup. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe sourced this tea from a friend in the Pu'er tea market. She has a storage house in Mengla, in the South of Xishuangbanna. The tea was stored slightly wet, but I would still call it dry storage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tea clearly shows its Naka origin. It probably had a rich flowery fragrance when young, and the ten years of aging have made it highly fruity. Naka has a good natural minerality, the feel of sucking on a rock. The aging process has reinforced this aspect, but the tea much more mellow than a young equivalent would be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a great comfort tea, on the softer side of the Menghai spectrum: low bitterness, medium astringency, quite active on the gums.
